Technology by technology
What each approach does well — and where it stops
Reverse osmosis
Genuinely excellent at removal. If your only goal is the lowest possible total dissolved solids, RO wins.
- Removes calcium and magnesium along with contaminants, producing demineralised water.
- Rejects a significant share of feed water to drain — a real cost where water is scarce or metered.
- Needs pressure, often a pump and a storage tank; membranes foul and need replacing.
- Does not prevent scale downstream of the unit in the rest of the building.
Ion-exchange softener
Effective at eliminating hardness symptoms — no scale, better lathering.
- Exchanges calcium and magnesium for sodium: worse water to drink, and unsuitable for irrigation.
- Requires regular salt purchases and produces brine discharge.
- Does not remove chlorine, organics or micropollutants.
- Regeneration cycles mean downtime and consumption.
Carbon cartridge / jug filter
Cheap, easy, improves taste at one tap.
- No scale protection anywhere in the building.
- Silent breakthrough — capacity is exhausted before performance visibly changes.
- Frequent replacement, ongoing plastic waste.
- No redox or mineral engineering at all.
